“The high level intention was never to force you to do something from a checklist,” creative director Julian Gerighty tells me. “It was always ‘Go out there, try and track down this intel that you’ve heard about this one expert who can maybe help you with your speeder.’ On the way, you see a ship crash land, and then you go and check it out. And things happen one after the other and it feels completely natural, because it’s you deciding to do those things in the order that you want to do them. So it feels very natural, and it feels very ingrained within not only the world that we built, but also the fantasy of the outlaw.”
What I think the continual march of the genre has made clear, though, is that “living” anywhere is often a repetition of boring daily tasks: going to work, doing the laundry, cooking dinner. I don’t think I want to be “immersed” (whatever that means) in an open world anymore; I want to have a nice, tailored experience that lets me do something new and fresh. I think if Massive had built a tighter, more focused adventure and stepped away from the current model of open-world games, the studio would have made a defining Star Wars game. The elements of something great are all here. As it is now, the result is a game that tries to do so much that it simply doesn’t have the time, energy, or resources to fully succeed at any of it.

They’re classics for a reason, and they hold enough variety to ensure that moving from one game to the other comes with its own challenges and differences of approach. It’s worth noting that there are variations within each game, should you fancy: you can draw 1 or 3 cards in Klondike, for example, and have Classic or Vegas scoring. They don’t make a huge difference and you can ignore them should you choose, but it’s nice to be able to tailor to preference.
